Nelson Mandela Exit is part of a larger series of video journeys filmed from the backseat of taxis en route to Nelson Mandela Road in Tehran, coinciding with the nationwide protests of January 2018. The work captures fragments of conversations, ambient sounds, and songs whose meanings are rooted in an Iran-based audience’s lived experience. Through the translation of these dialogues into subtitles, the work examines how language is mediated across contexts, where accessibility can also reshape meaning and construct subjective narratives. The tension between image, sound, and translated text creates a fractured dialogue that questions the authenticity of representation.
