Holy Movement series of images, inspired by the Sufi Whirling ritual and performances (Sama), remodels the performance to remove gendered and religious constraints as well as restrictions pertaining to attire, venue and music. Subjects are volunteers with no professional dance backgrounds; they are instructed to simply follow and move uninterruptedly to their music of choice, ranging from jazz to indie-rock to Latino. Each ‘dancer’ choreographed his/her individual Sama. The photographs are captured after each dancer gradually transcended into oblivion, reflecting individualistic movement patterns and personalized experiences of a theologically inspired performance.
