I attended Molana’s 800th Anniversary Commemoration in Konya, Turkey in 2007, its publicised and tourist-oriented Sufi Whirling Performances (Sama) and several private gatherings of the Dervish. The rituals and Sama inspire the Holy Movement series of images. I remodelled the performance to remove gendered and religious constraints as well as restrictions pertaining to attire, venue and music. My subjects are volunteers with no professional dance backgrounds; they are requested to simply follow and move uninterruptedly to their music of choice, which ranged from jazz to indie-rock to Latino. Each ‘dancer’ choreographed his/her individual Sama. The photographs are captured after each dancer gradually transcended into oblivion, reflecting individualistic movement patterns and personalized experiences of a theologically inspired performance.
